The
session on the topic organizing for empowerment started with the definition on
what is power?
The
sharer provided the definition of Weber that says “Power is the
ability to recognize one’s will even against resistance of others”. And also
the definition of J. Mondros on empowerment that states “Empowerment refers to
a psychological state-a sense of competence, control, and entitlement that
allows one to pursue concrete activities aimed at becoming powerful”.
When that question about power was asked,
the first thing that comes up into my mind was money. Why money? As been
observed in our community and as to our country, the one having the abundance
of money is the one who is into the position.
And that position signifies authority over the majority. So therefore,
that position symbolizes power and having the power tells everyone that you
have the money. Politically speaking that is the equation of power. And this songs comes into my mind:
And in
any organization, the one who is on the top is the powerful. Agree? Some might
agree, but some will not but that will depend now on the circumstances they had
experienced in their own organization. As what I had experienced in my organization. Luckily, we are given freedom to do what we had to do in imparting our knowledge into our students. I might say that is empowerment to me. In fact as an educator you should have all the powers you need so that you can deliver all the goods to the students, as long as you see to it that what you are doing is still bounded or in accordance to norms of your institution and as well as to the norms set by the counterpart agency of the government like the CHED for instance.
